Summer Girl: A Novel by Linda Watkins

"Does first love, true love, ever really die?" Andi Martin asks herself that question as she sits on the porch of the Sloane Cottage, her mind flooded with memories of the summer of '65 and a boy, once loved, but never forgotten.

Jake Chambers is also on a collision course with the past as he returns to Cutter Island for the first time in more than a decade. And, as the ferry approaches the wharf, he finds his mind filled with thoughts of a summer long forgotten and a girl destined to haunt him forever.

From award-winning author, Linda Watkins, comes a story of love, loss, survival, and, most of all, hope...Summer Girl, A Novel.

"...take a deep breath; because Summer Girl isn't formula writing about a summer fling, but a deeper story of coming of age, sexual abuse in families, and methods of survival that enter the picture of a blossoming interpersonal relationship, making Summer Girl an unexpectedly complex read." D. Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

"A heartfelt story of a boy and a girl....it captivated my heart from beginning to end." Patricia Bell for Readers Favorite

"...a tale of love arisen and somehow - despite vicious betrayal and extended adversity - preserved and growing, creating its own special hope." J. Scott Payne, author of Brought to Battle and The Green Hell

"Watkins is an outstanding author of literary fiction who writes about real life, real love, real pain, and reconciliation Summer Girl does just that. Watkins ‘characters are drawn from the heart. Summer Girl is a coming of life story told from a mature viewpoint. The story is about a young woman who has suffered abuse at an early age and finds love... and loss. The book is emotional, tender and will touch the hearts of every reader. Highly recommended as a superb summer read" Judith Lucci, Wall Street Journal Bestselling Author

Cold Coffee Book Review: Author Linda Watkins is another great Maine author who takes her readers on a journey that I found mesmerizing. With skilled precision, Linda lays out a summer chance encounter that leaves two young teens changed forever. I dare say that Andi and Jake’s story will grip your heart and might even bring back some summer memories of your own.

This well woven love story illuminates the magic of summer and the tragedy of abuse. Jake’s story took me back to my own lost summers. Andi’s story gripped my heart, as ghosts emerged from the shadows in my mind.

Ride the ferry boat over to Cutter Island, Maine with Jake as he returns in the summer of 1985. You know the feeling, the roller coaster ride of emotions as you return to a place in your childhood or youth. Time has a way of standing still, bringing back the sweet aromas, sights, sounds, and memories that are buried deep in your soul.

Join Jake and Andi on their adventure as the author takes us back to 1965. Listen to Jake as he explains, “Thus, we passed the balmy days of July. When I wasn’t working, I was with her. We took in an occasional movie, played golf, attended a local dance, or partied with other kids on the beach. But the time I relished most was when we were alone at Preacher’s Cove. Preacher’s was a small strip of sand down behind the Cutter Island Cemetery. Not too many people knew about it or went there because it was rocky and not a good place to sunbathe or swim. But for Andi and me it was heaven on earth.”

Feel the mounting emotion, as the summer of 1965 is drawing to an end. Jake and Andi’s teen romantic is threatened by the realization that their time is growing short and they are one ferry boat ride away from being separated forever. Unlike Romeo and Juliet, Jake and Andi choose to live and let life run its course.

Once you begin reading, you will want to follow their lives to the end of this book. See for yourself if young love can survive the test of time. What mysteries can The Sloane Cottage reveal after all these years?

I, Theodocia McLean, endorse Summer Girl by Linda Watkins as a summer likely to happen in the allure of young hearts and minds when time stands still for just a few weeks. I purchased this book from Kindle. This review was completed on May 29, 2018.

Sarah and Zoey: A Story About The Power of Unconditional Love by Linda Watkins

From award-winning author, Linda Watkins, comes a story of two women, from different walks of life, and the one dog who loved them both....

A feature writer for the Boston Globe, Sarah Palmer had it all – a beautiful apartment, a great job, and a family she adored. A thousand miles away, Mindy Sue Watson didn’t have it so good. Trapped in a marriage to an abusive alcoholic, her only pleasure was in tossing a ball to a skinny dog she’d adopted from the local shelter.

Sarah & Zoey is the tale of these two women and the one remarkable dog who saved them both. It is a story of the power of unconditional love.

"Three disparate lives - two human, one canine - whirl through a circle of circumstance that is poignant, involving, and especially moving to dog lovers who want a novella about crisis, escape, and recovery. Sarah and Zoey can be read in short segments, so it's perfect for busy fiction readers who want high drama packed into succinct chapters. The mechanics whereby loss and endangered lives heal are nicely portrayed in a winning story that emphasizes hope and offers an involving tale dog lovers will relish." D. Donovan, Midwest Book Review

"Every character is beautifully drawn, the contrasting lives and settings are vivid and so very different, the pace is fast, and the end utterly unpredictable. Sarah & Zoey is a powerful, heart-tugging story that must be read at one sitting; it’s too enthralling to put down. I loved this five-star novella, and I’ll be looking for more by Linda Watkins” Sarah Stuart for Readers Favorite

“A heart-warming novella with a feel-good factor that readers of this genre will enjoy immensely.” Jane Finch for Readers Favorite

"I loved this book! Even though the opening scenes were full of portent and dread (reading along, knowing something terrible was going to happen but no way to stop it) we learn of a woman who loses her husband and son to a freak accident; and another woman, a battered wife who is almost killed by her abusive spouse but is saved by her loyal dog, and then find that the dog is dragged almost to death by that husband… Where do you go from there? This awesome weaving of two injured women tied together by a remarkable dog is a story you won’t soon forget. I only wish it were longer, and I’m begging for a sequel!" Sherrill S. Cannon, Award-winning Author of "The Golden Rule."

  • 2014 FINALIST IN HORROR ~ READERS' FAVORITE INTERNATIONAL BOOK AWARD COMPETITION
"Fans of Watkins's Mateguas Island will welcome this solid sequel…Watkins smoothly integrates the paranormal with a complex family drama." Publishers Weekly

"This is a quick-paced story portraying a wide range of human emotions, deadly supernatural forces and ancient Native American beliefs that may help the characters survive the ordeal in store. It explores the depths of love and loss, dedication and defiance, innocence and desire - all in spite of the threat of losing everything. This is supernatural fiction at its best with a hint of coming-of-age enlightenment to appeal to younger readers as well as readers of all ages." Melinda Hills for Readers’ Favorite

"The real power in Return To Mateguas Island lies not so much in its inclusion of supernatural rituals as in its exploration of simmering emotions that lay just under the surface...Thus, its power and strength are most evident in its explorations of interpersonal relationships...the supernatural force described serves as a catalyst for events; not the end-all of these explorations. And it's the centrifuge of a whirlwind of emotional forces that swirl around all involved in the backdrop that is Mateguas Island and its mystical heritage ... the compelling draw of the island and its mysteries create suitable devices for a novel that excels in emotional interconnections with a dash of supernatural suspense added in for good measure." D. Donovan, eBook Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

"The use of lore and characters from Native American tribes is rendered beautifully, with the honor and respect so often overlooked in contemporary books ...Though it’s the second in a trilogy, this tale has a satisfying beginning, middle, and end—a journey readers won’t soon forget and one they will want to continue until all their questions are answered" Julie York for InD'Tale Magazine, February 2016.

"Return to Mateguas Island by Linda Watkins was a gripping read ... Excellent story-line, excellent characters in an all-round thrilling read. Linda's attention to detail is second to none and the book is very professionally written. Loved it!" Anne-Marie Reynolds for Readers’ Favorite

"Linda Watkins' contemporary dark fantasy, Return to Mateguas Island: A Tale of Supernatural Suspense, is well-written and fast-paced. While this is the second book in Watkins' Mateguas Trilogy, the author gives enough background to enable it to stand on its own, but the first book, Mateguas Island, is as marvelous, dark and brooding as this one is, and I'd recommend starting from there ...The Indian folklore that serves as the basis for this trilogy is so compelling, and Terri's interactions with Charlie, the elder Indian at the museum were powerful and intriguing ... Return to Mateguas Island: A Tale of Supernatural Suspense is absorbing dark fantasy, and it's most highly recommended." Jack Magnus for Readers’ Favorite

  • 2017 FINALIST IN "THRILLERS," Book Excellence Awards
  • 2017 FINALIST IN HORROR/SUSPENSE - IAN Book of the Year Awards
"Ghosts of Mateguas joins others in the Mateguas Island saga in providing the third novel in a series that excels in blending supernatural forces with a family's relationships and the lure of an island which has changed all their lives ... Ghosts of Mateguas offers a compelling saga of grief, guilt, and perseverance that deftly combines suspense with supernatural intrigue. Prior fans of the series, especially, will find the further interactions between the characters to be engrossing and satisfying, staying true to prior events while adding deeper insights and tension and intrigue to the mix and adding a dose of revelations and truths that draw together prior events in a satisfying new story just as well-crafted as its predecessors." Diane Donovan, Senior Reviewer, Midwest Book Review

"...a vivid and poetic read that beautifully channels modern supernatural melodrama ... Watkins plays to some deeply apparent strengths in this series, and Ghosts of Mateguas is another home-run of a title. Anyone looking for something different along the lines of Shirley Jackson or Stephen King, your prayers have been answered. Ghosts of Mateguas stands as a spellbinding exemplar of modern Gothic Americana." Self-Publishing Review

"Linda Watkins’ supernatural suspense novel, Ghosts of Mateguas: A Mateguas Island Novel, is dark, fast-paced and intense ...I had a grand time reading Ghosts of Mateguas and hope the author decides to write a fourth book in this terrifying and suspenseful series. It’s most highly recommended." Jack Magnus for Readers’ Favorite (5-Star Review)

"Those who love stories with some touch of mystery will not be disappointed with this one ... Watkins writes with moving simplicity, a kind of prose that tantalizes and is difficult to put down, because it rings with an eloquence that is akin to the spell of the ghosts sauntering along the rocky shores of Mateguas. It can be difficult to believe a story told about humans and ghosts, but when that story is told by Watkins, it becomes as convincing as it is real ... The story is fast paced; the suspense is so skillfully built into the story to have the reader turning the pages, and the characters are solid enough that any reader will care about what happens to them. One would say that Ghosts of Mateguas comes with a spell that makes the book impossible to put down. Beautifully written by a writer of a rare caliber." Romuald Dzemo for Readers’ Favorite (5-Star Review)

"I found Ghosts of Mateguas to be a quick-paced psychological thriller/horror story. The various stories that made up the tapestry of the whole were equally engaging and kept me turning the pages. If you enjoy books similar to Stephen King and Dean Koontz, be sure to check out the Mateguas Island books!" J. Aislynn d'Merricksson for Readers Favorite (5-Star Review)

Cold Coffee Press Spotlight Interview With Author Linda Watkins

Linda Watkins is the author of the multi-award-winning Mateguas Island Series.

She currently resides in Sedona, Arizona and, in another life, was a Senior Clinical Financial Analyst at Stanford University School of Medicine.

In 2006, she packed her belongings and, along with her four rescue dogs, took the plunge and moved to a remote island off the coast of Maine. It was there that she wrote Mateguas Island, which has garnered the following awards:
  • 2014 Gold Medal, Supernatural Fiction, Readers Favorite International Book Award Competition
  • 2014 First Place Award, Contemporary Gothic, Chanticleer Book Review, Paranormal Awards
  • 2015 Outstanding Novel in Horror/Suspense, IAN Book of the Year Awards
The second novel in the series, Return To Mateguas Island, was awarded:
  • First Place in Contemporary Gothic Fiction in the 2015 Chanticleer Book Review’s Paranormal Awards
  • Was Named 2015 Finalist in Horror by Readers Favorite International Book Award Competition
  • 2016 Finalist in Horror by the IAN Book of the Year Awards.
Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from Sedona, AZ? While my home is in Sedona now, I actually started writing seriously when I lived in Maine (Chebeague Island). I finished my first novel, Mateguas Island, there. I then moved to Muskegon, Michigan where I stayed for three short years. While in Michigan, I completed the sequel to Mateguas Island (Return to Mateguas Island) and the third novel in the series, Ghosts of Mateguas. Not happy with the weather in Muskegon (too much snow), I again set out to find a new home. I moved to Sedona in October of 2016. Sedona, with its abundant sunshine and beautiful red rocks, has been good for my writing and, since moving here, I have written Summer Girl and completed two unpublished works, Storm Island: A Kate Pomeroy Mystery, and The Witches of Storm Island, Book I: The Turning. These two works I expect to publish later in the year.
I’m proud to be a writer from each one of these states because they all inspired me, in one way or another, to put pen to paper and, thus, express my creativity.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? I’ve always been writing. As a child, my sister and I wrote plays based on the popular TV shows of the period. As an adult, I continued writing - mostly whimsical pieces, songs, and poems – and, at work (Stanford University), business plans and promotion papers for the Professoriate. When I decided to try my hand at a novel, it was my sister who was the first to encourage me. She is also a writer.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and did you use it to your advantage? Yes. Most of my books take place on islands much like the one I lived on for seven years. In the Mateguas books, this location brings a sense of isolation to the narrative, thus enhancing the suspense. In Summer Girl, I strove to express the wonders of island life and the strong sense of community that exists in these remote locations. In Storm Island, another Gothic novel, my heroine must deal with the limitations of island life, i.e., poor communication via Internet or phone. In addition, like with Mateguas, the sense of isolation is heightened.

What has been your most rewarding experience with your writing and publishing journey? The positive feedback (reviews, awards) I’ve received for my novels. I love getting a good review and it gives me a thrill when people from all over the world enjoy my work.

How many published books do you have? I have four novels, one novella, and one novelette published. I have two other works completed (a novel and a novella). I expect to publish these later this year.

Please introduce your genre and why you prefer to write in that genre? Three of my published novels and my novelette are American Gothic (The Mateguas Island Series and Secrets). My other novel is Literary Fiction (Summer Girl) and my novella is Women’s Fiction. The two unpublished manuscripts are, once again, American Gothic.
I like writing Gothic fiction because it’s really over the top. The genre stretches the boundaries of reality, has an aura of mystery, and, also, can include a smattering of romance. It’s a fun genre to write. On the other hand, a novel like Summer Girl was difficult to write because it deals with serious subject matter – child abuse. I cried a lot when as I wrote it, but, in the end, I believe it’s my best work to date.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Don’t give up! Keep writing no matter what.

Who is your favorite author and why? My favorite author is Stephen King, mainly because he draws his characters so beautifully, especially little kids and teenage boys. But he didn’t write my favorite book, which is The Magus by John Fowles (original edition). No matter how many times I read The Magus, I always come away with some new insight on life. Another book that I love is The Lightkeepers by Abby Geni. Ms. Geni paints a picture with every scene, sometimes beautiful and, sometimes, dark and terrible. These novels inspire me and, I hope, make me a better writer.
