Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from Arlington, TX, USA? As a writer from Arlington, TX USA I am proud to be a mother, wife, corporate employee and novelist. I am a patriot and thank every day that I was fortunate enough to be born into this incredible country.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? When I was a kid and we would play ‘pretend’ I would write down the adventures we would have and if flourished from there. I would write for my favorite TV shows and then I began creating my own characters. My imagination is endless and I wanted and want to see what happens.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? When I turned 35 I had a mid-thirty crisis. I looked at my life as it stood on that day. I have a wonderful husband, three kids, a loving extended family, a job I enjoy and I am financially comfortable (not too comfortable…it is a wooden chair at best). BUT internally I wasn’t satisfied with myself. I felt like I wasn’t doing what I was supposed to be doing with my life. So I decided I needed to write, and write for real. I needed to pursue my passion. A year later I had written two novels and numerous short stories. I kept going and Extasy Books signed me earlier this year.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and why? My father grew up in a very creatively active family so I was raised with a love of the Arts so my family has always been very supportive of my creative nature. Without the support of my family I doubt I would have the confidence to do what I do.

Do you come up with your title (s) before or after you write the manuscript (s)? It depends; sometimes I have it upfront, other times it comes in the middle and sometimes at the end. I never know until it clicks.

Tell us why you write the genre (s) that you write? I write Romantic Suspense. I have always been told to write what I love. That being said, I am in love with love and my spirit craves adventure. I am not a straight romance writer; personally I can’t pallet it so I don’t write it. As a reader I crave intense drama, angst, strong characters and plots that push the boundaries of possibility, thus the Romantic Suspense. For anyone who has read my book (or anything I have written) I work hard to balance the two, tipping the edge the genre.

Tell us your most rewarding experience while in the writing process? Taking the journey. I love the process, I am a writer who writes and lets the characters and the story take me where it wants to go. I love that I will start at one point and end up exactly where I wanted, but it is completely different than where I started. I also love creating characters that become as real to me as my own family. It is hard work but thrill throughout.

Tell us your most negative experience while in the writing process? Distraction. Real life is very distracting and as silly as it sounds it is very annoying when you have a flow going…

Tell us your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? There have been several surprises along the way. The first has been that I have been lucky enough to sign with such as supportive and awesome publisher. Tina and Jay are truly awesome and I thank my blessings every day that they gave me a shot. Another surprise has been to discover myself as a determined promoter. I am paying my dues but it has been a learning experience that I have tried to share with other writers. I started a dedicated page on my website for author promotions, and started a Google Group in an attempt to ‘share the wealth’. My motto has become, ‘In helping each other, we are helping ourselves. This venture has brought a lot of unexpected enthusiasm and support.

Tell us your most negative experience in your publishing journey? My novel is an eBook. This is newer venue and I my biggest frustration has been the lack of expectation, as well as the lack of inventive and fresh ideas for promoting. Marketing seems to be limited to the cyber world and this to me is frustrating. That being said, I have taken this challenge and run with it. I don’t like boxes.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? Write what you love. If you write what you love, your passion, you will be able to express it and get people passionate about it as well. Excitement is contagious. The more excited you are about your books the more likely you will be successful. Published or not.

Who is your favorite author? Mercedes Lackey is the author who first showed me a strong female character (Diana Trigrade). Since then I have been a huge fan of her work. As corny as it sounds I also love the Harry Potter books. They are the ONLY books, besides my own, I have read more than once.

Author Spotlight – Gaspar DeMarco

Cold Coffee Author Spotlight Interview With Gaspar DeMarco

Gasper Demarco

Gaspar DeMarco was born and raised in Newark, New Jersey to deaf parents. He attended both Catholic and Public schools while growing up there. He was in the Boy Scouts, and received numerous merit badges and also the ‘Daughters of the American Revolution Award’. He has attended Lincoln Tech., DeVry Tech. and has degrees as an Automotive and Electronics Technician. He is co-owner of a Plumbing, Heating and Fire Suppression Company. ‘The Vacation’ is his first book.

Interview:

What makes you proud to be a writer from Newark New Jersey? Knowing people that have made, or done something for themselves from my city. I am proud to be one of them. Being from a large city, you only hear the bad things and it would be nice if they would also say the good things that happen here.

What or who inspired you to become a writer? I had the idea for a book. When I told my friends about it they kept saying that I should write it down, since they were tired of me talking about it. So for encouraging me I thanked them at the end of my book.

When did you begin writing with the intention of becoming published? After I talked with my friends and started typing the book that's when I knew that I would publish it.

Did your environment or upbringing play a major role in your writing and why? Between my surroundings and what I saw on television were factors that played a role in my writing.

Do you come up with your title (s) before or after you write the manuscript (s)? The title of my book came after I started typing it.

Tell us why you write the genre (s) that you write? Since my book is not fact-based but rather a drama, the Fiction genre seemed to fit.

Tell us your most rewarding experience while in the writing process? Making up my mind to type it and then seeing the words on my computer screen and on paper.

Tell us your most negative experience while in the writing process? As I was writing my thoughts on paper, more ideas came into my head and my hands could not keep up with my thoughts, which was frustrating.

Tell us your most rewarding experience in your publishing journey? To have the finished product, my book in hand and smell the print and paper as I was fanning through it.

Tell us your most negative experience in your publishing journey? Literary Agents are harsh and very critical. Unless you are well-known or pay a nice sum to an Agent, you are on your own and that is the negative side of what I have experienced in publishing.

What one positive piece of advice would you give to other authors? I would tell anyone that asked me to just do it. If you have an idea, write it down and get it out there. There's nothing like regret. I should have done this or I should have done that. Just do it. It may take you some time, but do it. When it's all done, you will be proud of yourself for doing it.

Who is your favorite author? Stephen King is my favorite Author. The ideas he comes up with and how he plays them out in the books is just amazing.

Is there anything else that you would like to share with us? I wish that there were more outlets to get the book noticed. Since I am working with limited funds, I cannot hire a publicist or an agent to book me on radio or television. So, if you are on limited funds, do book shows, flea markets, and set library dates, anything to get your book out there.
